Cool Shoe Scramble

The arrival of Hurricane Sandy, and the blast of downright icy air that has followed has left most of us, style enthused, scrambling to find our winter clothes! Record breaking snowfall and lows across the east coast caused a fury of folks to pull out the bug guns. That’s right, prepared or not, WINTER IS HERE! During my time living in the mountains of the Blue Ridge, I haven’t seen air this cold, this early. Being from sunny Florida, it’s also really amusing to hear FL friends Facebook status’ and tweets crying out for the God’s to take this “freezing” cold elsewhere! While the temps may vary over the coming weeks, the fact is, winter is here to stay, and we had better style ourselves accordingly!

Shoes are one of my favorite things to buy and winter shoes are by far the best. They call for more coverage and with that comes an array of exciting materials like Italian leather’s, rubber, suede, knits, and even denim. Just like with winter clothes, adding layers is the biggest trend of the season. Not only layers of different materials, but also of stitching techniques, colors, and even styles. The goal really, is to find the shoe with the most exciting detail, while staying within the realm of style. Here are a few of my absolute favorites for the season..

Because of my undying love for dark denim, quality Leather, and “slim” style, my first choice for the seasonal shoe is Reid, by HELM handmade. Its unique lines, exquisite attention to detail and top-notch materials is one that cannot be duplicated. This boot features denim panels made from U.S. Cone Mills raw denim from Raleigh Denim in Raleigh, NC and Chromexcel leather from Horween Tannery in Chicago. A Leather sole with infused non-slip rubber, six brass eyelet shaft, roundcap toe, white HELM signature midsole, and Blake Rapid Stitch construction round out this classic boot, which comes in Carolina Brown in sizes 7-12, including half sizes. (killer description from the HELM shop)! Though these boots are on the steepest side of the pricing realm, at $399, they are a purchase that will pay off in full. With a little preventative maintenance, your pair of leather HELM boots can easily last 15 to 20 years… or longer.

Be sure to visit the HELM shop and make your purchase, or at least salivate for a while!

Here is a great example of the many choices you have in winter shoes. Though I could not find the source for this photo, and also the reason my search for a flannel/leather boot continues, this shows the realm from one end to the other. A sneaker that with the right sock, would do just fine in the coldest conditions, and the warmest of boots all the way down the line.

The 3 shoes shown above are great examples of a completely versatile shoe for all-weather. The skinny lace up leather is one that looks slim enough to wear almost anywhere but is still warm enough to wear in the coldest conditions. The last 2 shown are what I would describe as the perfect office winter shoes. They will both go with almost any color, dressed up for the office or, as shown, dressed down for the streets. They are not too heavy, and not too light. While staying on trend with fabrics and buckle, these two are choices that I would have on hand all the time. Bring them along in the suitcase with your heaviest boots, you never know when the winter weather will surprise you, the sun will shine through the snow clouds, and a lighter outfit and shoe will be the perfect choice.

If I have anything at all to sum this post up, it is that while shoes and shirt are required in most places, the choices you make fulfilling that requirement is totally up to you!

I would also like to say that my heart is with all those affected by Hurricane Sandy on the coast, and also in the mountains.

J. Crew Clearance Store = Bliss

A few weeks ago  I heard the greatest news I have heard in a very long time.. Upon moving to North Carolina a few years ago, I was slightly disappointed in my shopping choices. That all changed upon googling J. Crew Asheville, NC. The words that appeared on the screen with a tiny red dot extremely close to my house “J. Crew Factory Clearance store”.. well.. they made my month. As you could imagine the next few steps of planning my attack and researching happened quite quickly. I decided to visit the store and crossed my fingers for good deals. What I got was better than I could possibly have imagined. A clearance store attached to a warehouse full of J. Crew goodness, with all the bells and whistles. I had expected a small bare room with a few crappy racks filled to the brim with old collections. What I got was so much more. A tiny slice of J. Crew heaven. A store roughly modeled after a true J. Crew retail store, with about half the inventory. But very fresh collections. After shopping around for an hour or so, trying on everything I picked up, I ended the trip with only 1 purchase, but a very exciting one! I left with a smile on my face, and plans to attend the August warehouse blowout sale. The associate did give me a fun bit of information before I left though. The store is replenished weekly, but she uttered the most exciting words, “we get a few new PALLETS a week”. Could you imagine? Unpacking pallets of J. Crew clearance merchandise? I think I would do a cannon ball right into the stack! Here’s the low-down!

The pricing is very simple,

Shorts $20-$30

Pants $20-$40

Shirts $10-$20

Blazers (yes, amazing blazers) $100-$120

Strategy: Go through the store and grab everything you think you like in your size, then head to the fitting rooms. This is a final sale clearance store, no returns, if it fits perfectly, get it. This is no time for “I’ll return it later if it doesn’t work”. You must swiftly make your decision, it could be gone before you can decide! With prices like this, you have to get something! They have all the accessories, ties, jewelry & bags that you could want to choose from, just go for it!

Ladies: You are much better off than the men in this store. The lady’s side of the store is much larger and you have much more to choose from, and even bigger savings. You would be crazy to visit the area without stopping!

All in all, I think I will become very familiar with this place, who wouldn’t!

My big purchase…

I made out with this $65.00 pair of Club Shorts for just $20… I can’t even take it!

What I’m Wearing

This has been a pretty crazy week. I have been hired to produce a show at the high school I graduated from. With that comes lot’s of stress and time. The show is tonight and I am so excited for it to be over! Not much time to talk as I have to go make some finishing touches to the stage for tonight. Very excited to ride to North to my NC home for the weekend! I could really use a hike and a nice stream to relax by! I will say, yesterday, last night really was amazing! Got together with my friend shannon and ate some tacos, and had some delicious margaritas! My outfit worked out really well yesterday so photos were a must!

Shorts: A guide

Having been in Florida for about a month now, I have been through the up’s and down’s where the weather is concerned. It amazes me that in most other places a season means one type of weather, continuously. Today however, I woke up to 40 degrees, and went to sleep to 80. My point is, it’s just about time to pull out the shorts, and please, don’t do it without reading this first!

Just like most other things in fashion, there are right ways, and wrong! Shorts can be a grey area for some guys! First of all, cargo shorts are being sold almost everywhere this year, just like most years. Why? For some guys, a bulky look can be good. I’m just not sure why one would need that many pockets. Personally, I never wear the things! I like my shorts to fit well, sleek and sporty. The right fabric can make a big difference too. Go for a “nice” pair of shorts, you’ll know what I mean when your shopping!I have an old pair of Old Navy shorts I like to work in the yard in and they just feel wrong, they were cheap! Length is a good place to decide what you like personally. Just below the knee would be great for a taller guy, I am relatively short, so I like to go just above my knee. You will definitely see shorter shorts on guys this year. If your into it, go for it, just make sure you can pull it off!  Color is another preferential factor! Color automatically says style this year, so go for it! Urban Outfitters has some amazing BDG shorts in an array of colors this year! Now that you have your shorts, it’s time for a shirt. This can change your look drastically.. go for a nice basic tee and its a casual day on the town, a tucked in polo, or rolled up long sleeve will class it up a bit. My favorite way to wear shorts is with a button up woven. Roll the sleeves up to your elbow and your look will be top notch! Make sure not to leave the norm behind when wearing shorts, we wear belts with pants, and we should also wear them with shorts. A nice leather belt is great but a colored canvas will trend this year! Last but not least, shoes. A pair of leather boat shoes, or lace up athletic inspired sneakers will work great. socks are a place to be careful, no one wants to look like the old guy with the white socks on, find yourself a no show sock, yes they look funny when you put them on but the purpose they serve is great. $3 a pair at Urban Outfitters and you wont kill your look with a shown sock! Be careful with flops or sandals. These are strictly beach wear. I grew up wearing flip-flops everyday and now realize, they are not everyday shoes. No support, and they don’t help your look much either. Always keep style in mind! Take a look at how these guys do it!
